Caribbean farmers are at the frontline of climate change.

One of the most significant challenges for small island developing states is the vulnerability of agricultural production in the face of climate change.

Our free digital platform – www.Farmer.Community – connects small-scale farmers with one another and the power of knowledge.

Unlocking the collective impact of climate-smart farming resources and mobile technology.

We collaborate with agriculture experts to share capacity building knowledge with underserved small-scale farmers, particularly women and youth.

Our objective:

Support farmers to achieve climate resilience and build agribusiness skills development to improve community livelihoods and local food security.

Role Summary

Provide assistance and advice to our digital farmer community on all aspects of small farm management the Tropics (Global South) including; cultivation, fertilization, harvesting, soil erosion and composition, disease prevention, nutrition, crop rotation, agribusiness management and marketing.

In order to address climate vulnerability, provide assistance and advice to help small farmers adopt sustainable and climate-smart techniques. Provide practical knowledge sharing on more efficient farm management systems as like irrigation, rainwater harvesting systems, terracing, composting, mulching and more.

Responsibilities

  • Provide counseling and advisory services to farmers on crop cultivation and fertilization, harvesting, animal and poultry care, disease prevention, farm management, farm financing, marketing and other agricultural subjects
  • Prepare and conduct advisory information sessions and lectures for farmers and other groups
  • Conduct research, analyze agricultural data and prepare research reports
  • Liaise with researchers, educators and government or business managers on matters pertaining to farming and agriculture as it effects our digital www.farmer.community
  • Maintain records of services provided and the effects of advice given
  • Future possibility to provide in-person training (Caribbean) and knowledge sharing in the operation of unmanned aerial vehicle/drone to map drainage, plant seeds, analyze crop health and identify areas of stress and evenly spray fertilizers or pesticides.

Qualifications

Prior experience of the agricultural industry is essential.

Degree in soil/earth sciences, agriculture, horticulture, crop/plant science or animal.

In the field experience as a agriculture advisor or extension service provider working with small-scale farmers, preferably in the Global South or Tropics.
