SUMMER YOUTH ROOM COORDINATOR

The City of Oshawa is now accepting applications for a Summer Youth Room Coordinator (up to 36 hours per week; minimum of 8 weeks, shift work required, starting July 2, 2024).

Reporting to the Supervisor, Recreational Programs, the Summer Youth Room Coordinator is responsible for planning & implementing instructional/drop-in sessions for the Youth Room Program, an initiative funded by Canada Summer Jobs. The Summer Youth Room Coordinator will use guidelines from the physical literacy program to develop programming for youth ages 8 to 17. Youth will be engaged to play a role in the planning, leadership and delivery of the program using the Positive Youth Development Model. The youth in the community will come together to engage in healthy play with their peers.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for ensuring the safety, enjoyment and care of participants in the Youth Room Program
  • Plan, organize, lead and supervise formal and informal/ structured and unstructured recreational programs and activities for children and youth demographic.(8-17 years of age) on and off site
  • Ensuring Canada Summer Jobs grant requirements are being adhered to;
  • Ensuring City of Oshawa policies and procedures are being adhered to (fire, power failure, building evacuation); reporting all incidents, accidents, issues and concerns to Supervisor; completing all formal paper work (accident, incident, complaint forms, daily attendance, lesson plans);
  • Being familiar with City of Oshawa policies and procedures, and emergency procedures; and be able to implement such procedures (fire, power failure, building evacuation);
  • Liaison with community groups to provide crucial information to children as required (i.e. housing and/ or health information)
  • Update information boards with pertinent community and activity information for youth
  • Create long range sustainable plans for youth and youth room activities (I.e. 3 months, 6 months, 1 year)
  • Carryout market research from youth- what do they want.
  • Produce a youth calendar of events for the area and community
  • Create and upkeep inventory list for programs
  • Regularly create a requisition of supplies for the youth room program
  • Support and demonstrate the City of Oshawa core values of Authenticity, Courage, and Trust

 

Requirements:

 

  • Possess and keep current Standard First Aid/CPR ā€˜C’ qualifications
  • Preference given to applicants with one (1) year of college in the Child and Youth Care Program and/ or Diploma in Recreation and Leisure Services, sport coaching experience and/or possess coaching certifications for children and/ or youth
  • Must have leadership qualities (i.e. reliable, honest, good communication skills in both verbal and written, good interaction skills, demonstrate confidence and leadership qualities, show genuine respect and concern for others, have humility and empathy, ability to handle difficult situations with tact and professionalism and be a good role model outside of working hours)
  • Preference given to applicants with experience/understanding from working with children and youth from priority neighborhoods
  • Preference given to those with experience in a Supervisory/Camp Director role.
  • Demonstrate good customer service and communication skills to deal effectively and courteously with staff and the public
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships
  • Attend all staff trainings and meetings
  • Ability to work shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as required
  • Meet the eligibility requirements of the Canada Summer Jobs program:
    • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period;
    • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment;
    • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations;
    • Please note, international students are not eligible participants.

As a condition of employment, the City of Oshawa will require successful candidates to undergo a Criminal Records and Judicial Matters Check with Vulnerable Sector Check.

All training hours are paid at minimum wage as outlined in the Employment Standards Act.

 

The City of Oshawa is situated on lands and waters within the Williams Treaties Territory, home to seven First Nation communities of the Michi Saagiig and Chippewa Anishinaabeg, who have cared for and maintained these lands from time immemorial and continue to do so to present day.
