JOB SUMMARY

The Planning, Real Estate and Economic Development (PRED) department is responsible for the planning and delivery of growth activities for the City of Ottawa, including long range land use planning, the City’s long-term transportation plan, the prioritization of transportation investments, development approvals, management and long-term strategies for the City’s real estate portfolio, delivering on major city-building projects, and identifying opportunities to foster economic prosperity.

The Right-of-Way, Heritage and Urban Design Services Branch is responsible for building a vibrant and safe public realm to protect and enhance Ottawa’s legacy. Programs and services include Surveys and Mapping, Right-of-Way, GIS and Data Management, Heritage, Urban Design, and Inspections.

You assist the supervisor or designate in performing the following intermediate level engineering functions as required, including:

  • Entering and maintaining data, conducting data audits and analysis and preparing data records; and,
  • Conducting engineering fieldwork including conducting visual surveys, collecting data, taking photographs.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum age of 16 years is required for Summer Student jobs

Post-Secondary Student (completion of first year college or university) mechanical, chemical, environmental or electrical engineering, architectural or civil/structural engineering program with a strong computer applications background

Minimum of 8 months but less than 1 year of related experience is required

General work experience required.  Experience in Engineering environment will be considered an asset.

KNOWLEDGE

  • Basic knowledge of aspects of the construction project management and administration process
  • Basic level of knowledge of engineering theories, techniques, and procedures or higher mathematics
  • Basic level competency in writing and testing computer programs
  • Basic computer application use which may include Microsoft Excel, Word, Project, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access and Foxpro, MapInfo, ITX, ArcView, AutoCAD, Microstation 95

COMPETENCIES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to operate a plotter, engineering copier, etc.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to recognize process problems to prevent the need for costly repairs
  • Ability and willingness to work outdoors and on construction sites
  • Ability to operate cars and small trucks
  • Ability to read engineering plans and specifications, and reports
  • Ability to read or prepare designs and/or technical drawings
  • Ability to perform simple quantity calculations and to record data as directed
  • Ability to work with sensitive process and analytical instruments
  • Ability to work in an office setting within a technical work environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff, including participating in meetings, presentations and interacting with the public
  • Strong analytical skills and sound judgment
  • Ability to prioritize and work independently
  • Students must supply own CSA-approved, green patch safety work boots.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Language Requirement: Various language requirements, locations may require English only, French only OR Bilingual competencies. Some positions require English oral, reading, and writing. Some positions required French oral, reading and writing.
  • Driver’s License Requirement:  A valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated; This position requires the successful candidate to use their own transportation.
