JOB SUMMARY
The mandate of the Health Protection Service is to advance the health of Ottawa residents through the provision and delivery of integrated, client-centric health protection services and programs including: Infection Prevention & Control, Sexual Health, Communicable Diseases, Outbreak Management, Substance Misuse, Emergency Preparedness, Response and Recovery, Food Safety, Safe Water, Health Hazards Prevention and Management, and Healthy Environments as outlined in Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care standards, protocols and guidelines.
Reporting to a Program Manager or other supervisor in the Public Health Inspection Branch, you are responsible for assisting with the collection of recreational water and environmental samples for Ottawa Public Health. This includes organizing and maintaining equipment necessary for daily field operations, operating monitoring equipment, transporting samples to designated labs and documenting the work activities throughout the inspection and sampling process. You also assist with the analysis, interpretation and reporting of monitoring and inspection data using various computer applications, and update Ottawa Public Health’s social media platforms (i.e. OPH website, Facebook and Twitter) with up-to-date health advisories.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Post-secondary Student – completion of first year college or university in Science, Applied Science, Environmental or Public Health, or other related field
Minimum of 4 months but less than 8 months of related experience is required in client services or public relations. Operation of a small vehicle (car/van/pick-up) in the performance of the duties
CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES
KNOWLEDGE
- Knowledge of techniques for the collection of environmental samples and conducting inspections;
- General field safety practices

- Excellent verbal and written communications skills
- Knowledge of MS Word and Excel, and other computer systems
- Strong interpersonal, organizational and problem-solving skills • Able to express opinions and make suggestions.

- Willingness to work some weekends and/or the occasional evening
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Language Requirement: Various language requirements, locations may require English only, French only OR Bilingual competencies. Some positions require English oral, reading, and writing. Some positions required French oral, reading and writing.
- Driver’s License Requirement: A valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated; This position requires the successful candidate to use their own transportation.
