Kent has a Process Safety Engineering Co-op opportunity for the Winter 2024 term in our Calgary, Alberta office. Kent has adopted a hybrid working arrangement which will require both remote and in person work.
As part of a leading consultancy, the candidate will participate in delivery of Process Safety consultancy services across a wide range of clients within high hazard industries such as Oil & Gas, Low Carbon and Renewables industries.
Your responsibilities:
• As a Process Safety Engineering Intern, the candidate will be involved in a variety of exciting work assignments, which could include:Working as part of a Process Safety consulting team, responsible for delivering a variety of process safety studies:
• Preparation, scribing and supporting the facilitation of Process Hazard Analyses such as HAZOP, SILA, LOPA and Bow Ties.
• Consequence analysis through the modelling of Fire and Explosion scenarios.
• Data analysis, tool utilization and technical reporting for Facility Siting Studies and Quantitative Risk Assessments.
• Developing technical skills and competence in risk identification, risk assessment and risk management methodologies in accordance with relevant industry codes and standards.
• Supporting Senior and Principal Process Safety Consultants in project work and ongoing client consultancy activities such as project management and results presentation.
This position is designed to provide students with real work experience, offering an opportunity to learn how to deliver highly professional services tailored to meet the technical competency expectations of Kent and its clients.
Your knowledge/skills, education, and experience:
• The candidate will be working towards an undergraduate degree in chemical, mechanical, environmental or petroleum engineering and will have preferably completed a minimum of 3 years in good standing. The ideal candidate will have:
• Excellent report writing and presentation skills.
• Attention to detail and thorough self-checking mentality.
• A co-operative and helpful attitude toward both colleagues and clients.
• A strong drive and willingness to learn from colleagues and clients.
• A self-starter with ability to work under minimal supervision while taking direction from experienced engineers.
• Adaptable to changing working hour requirements as needed to accommodate project work and client needs in other time zones.
Additional Desirable Skills:
• Familiarity with high hazard industries and process safety definitions and processes.
• Ability to read and understand process drawings including P&IDs and PFDs.
• Interest in tool development and process optimization through programming applications (e.g., VBA, Python, Matlab).
• Ambitions to acquire Professional Engineering license.
