Support Staff Full-time New Position

The Student Engagement Programmer is an active member of the Student Engagement team, and works collaboratively with team members to assess need, develop, design, deliver and evaluate programs that foster a sense of belonging and inclusion, cultivates student leadership and development, promotes community and civic engagement, and supports student transition to College.

Assigned portfolios may include but are not limited to working collaboratively with community and College partners to develop and implement programming to meet the diverse needs of students, researching best practices, and consulting and coaching student leaders. The Student Engagement Programmer applies student development theory to design, plan and coordinate initiatives that enhance the students sense of belonging, inclusion and community

Developing and supporting student leadership positions, the Student Engagement Programmer develops and coordinates methods to involve students in on and off-campus community engagement and volunteering opportunities, while providing guidance and skills development coaching to student staff.

Successful candidates will be required to conduct work within Ontario and must be available to work on campus as required. It is anticipated that this position will meet the needs of the department through a hybrid work arrangement with 3 days on-site, and 2 days remote.

Please note that travel to other campuses will be required of this position.

Responsibilities

  • Developing and delivering programming to increase sense of inclusion and belonging for African, Black and Caribbean (ABC) identified students
  • Participating in recruiting, hiring, training, guiding, and providing formal and informal feedback to students in paid positions (e.g., ABC Peer Inclusion leaders)
  • Participating in recruiting, interviewing, hiring and training unpaid student positions (i.e. ABC Student Ambassador Advisory Group, ABC Student Committee)
  • Developing, researching, organizing and executing programming and events that promote and explore belonging and inclusion with the support of students in both paid and unpaid positions
  • In collaboration with other college Areas (i.e. Academics, Employee Experience & Development (EE&D), Conestoga Students Inc., Security Services and International Education, etc.), planning and executing a coordinated approach to foster a welcoming, respectful, inclusive, and equitable learning environment through various mediums (e.g. consistent messaging, resources, promotional materials, educational initiatives, etc.)
  • Fostering partnerships with faculty to engage programs/courses in event execution and participation
  • Collaborating with internal and external community partners to enrich and support programming and initiatives eKhaya SG, Kitchener- Waterloo Multicultural Center
  • Coordinating promotion in accordance with the Student Engagement marketing plan and event cycle
  • Organizing on and off-campus educational awareness through, workshops, information sessions, one-off events, for students etc., including Black History programming
  • Coordinating and supporting volunteer Student Committee(s) as identified in the Student Engagement Department Annual Activity Plan (e.g., ABC Student Committee)
  • Participating in recruiting, training, scheduling and supporting student volunteer positions (e.g. Student Engagement Volunteers)
  • Liaising and collaborating with community organizations in order to develop action plans and access support
  • Developing, organizing coordinating the logistics and execution of any related events (e.g. scheduling, room booking, transportation, guest speakers, work requests, etc.)
  • Maintaining records and statistics, analysing quantitative and qualitative statistical data, evaluating effectiveness of initiative against defined outcomes, developing reports and making recommendations that target continuous improvement
  • Supporting Student Engagement initiatives as required, including event support (e.g. Orientation etc.), promoting Student Engagement initiatives during College events, delivering Leadership workshops and Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) series, and participating on committee(s), as identified by supervisor
  • Researching best practice models used outside of the College

Qualifications

  • Three-Year Diploma/Degree in Community Development, Education, Social Sciences, International Studies, or a related field
  • Three years of experience working with individuals in a community development, human rights, social justice, or EDI capacity, preferably within an educational setting
  • Demonstrated ability to work with African, Black or Caribbean communities
  • Demonstrated experience, knowledge and understanding of working with international students or immigrants
  • Demonstrated experience advising, leading, motivating, supervising and guiding student staff or volunteers
  • Experience developing and facilitating experiential workshops, specifically related to the topics of leadership and equity, diversity and inclusion
  • Substantial knowledge of and practical experience working with event planning/managing and risk management processes
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate and apply literature, research, institutional data and theoretical frameworks to establish evidence and outcomes-based programs and services
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations (as defined in the Human Rights Charter) and ability to facilitate discussions around diversity, discrimination, anti-racism and inclusion
  • Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution and emotional intelligence skills to develop and maintain collaborative partnerships with internal and external community stakeholders
  • Strong judgment, agility, and adaptability
  • Strong aptitude for written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to client service, specifically students, staff, and external contacts
  • Intermediate to advanced level Microsoft365, MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint is also required
  • Access to reliable transportation and ability to travel to multiple locations
  • Must be available to work evenings, and some weekends
