At Nova Scotia Power, we see the diversity of our team as one of our strengths – one we continue to build upon on and celebrate. Our five-year community investment strategy focuses on supporting programs, organizations, and initiatives that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, help to remove barriers, and advance education and drive awareness in our communities.
There are four (4) $2,500, non-renewable awards available to Black students entering any year of a full time post-secondary education program. Preference will be given to applicants enrolled in the areas of Power Engineering, Power Line Technician, Instrumentation Tech, Engineering, Technology, Business, Marketing & Communications, Environmental Sciences or Law. Recipients may have the opportunity to participate in a 12-week paid internship at Nova Scotia Power during their term of study. Recipients will be notified to apply for opportunities.
Past recipients are eligible to re-apply each year for up to four (4) years while still enrolled in a college or undergraduate university program.
Eligibility & Selection Criteria
- Applicants must be Canadian citizens of African descent and permanent residents of Nova Scotia.
- Priority will be given to African Nova Scotians who self-identify as Indigenous Black, Africadian, Afri-Scotian or Scotian and who are descendants of free and enslaved Black Loyalists, Black Refugees, Maroons and other Black people who were settled across 52 indigenous (original) land-based Black communities.
In addition to lineage, other indicators of connection may include information such as:
- Having family members who reside in one or more of the communities.
- Having been raised in the culture of the historical Black churches of Nova Scotia.
- Attending African Nova Scotian community events.
- Participating in organizations or other activities connected to one or other of the African Nova Scotian communities.
Please be prepared to speak to your connection to the African Nova Scotian community as defined above if selected for an interview.
This bursary will not be awarded in conjunction with any other Nova Scotia Power Inc. scholarship or bursary and will not be awarded for the pursuit of graduate studies.
Application Requirements
To qualify, please complete the African Nova Scotian Bursary program online application and include the following documents.
- Resume
- High School transcript (Grade 10-12, including fall semester marks) or University transcript (unofficial is acceptable)
- Essay; max 500 words. Tell us your story! This is your opportunity to introduce yourself to the Selection Committee and will help us get to know the person behind the application form.
- TOPIC: “Tell us about your accomplishments, goals, and involvement in your community. Describe a time in your life and/or a way you have contributed to your community that has shaped who you are as a person.”

Selection Process
A selection committee, made up of Nova Scotia Power Employees and member(s) of the African Nova Scotian Community, will review the applications and make their decisions based on the following criteria: financial need, leadership and service to the community, involvement in extra-curricular activities and the essay portion of the application form. Selected applicants may be invited for an interview.
